Leadership Styles

This light-hearted look at leadership styles takes about three minutes (by way of introduction).

Three videos focusing on leadership approaches follow this article. The first two are excellent, looking at two contrasting styles and their implications in a customer care or customer service context.

The third discusses four different ways to lead. If you enjoy this presentation, you will find an expansion of these ideas in our article, situational leadership.

Here is Mike Bell's take on inspirational leadership, titled:

8 Behaviors Of Inspirational Leaders

Of all the leadership styles you might be asked to draw on, how do you feel about being expected to inspire? Does your personal leadership style fit the bill?

Inspiration is a quality much sought after in leaders, but apparently in very short supply. Perhaps this is because there is no clear agreement on what we mean by it. The word has its roots in medieval English where is meant the 'immediate influence of God or a god' but I hope not too many staff are expecting their leaders to be gods!

It is also used in a scientific way to mean 'breathe life into' and this might be a little closer in a metaphorical sense.

Most of us would think of inspiration in terms of stimulation or arousal of the mind, feelings, etc, to a special or unusual level of activity or creativity.

So here are eight leadership preferences - ways that leaders might behave - for their staff to find them inspiring:

1. Creativity and Imagination

Inspirational leaders would be skilled at engaging their creativity and imagination, and evoking that of their people. They would paint pictures of attractive futures that would inspire people to follow them.

2. Appreciation and Gratitude

They would demonstrate a deep understanding of the present state of themselves (thoughts, feelings and so on), and of the organisation. Without blaming or judging, they would focus people's attention on identifying what was needed.

3. Open and Transparent

Inspiring leaders would not hide the truth. This leadership style would not be afraid to speak of the dangers inherent in moving towards their vision and would pay attention to the emotional impact that change brings about.

4. Identity and Purpose

Of all leadership styles, these make a concrete connection with the vision of the organization. Lleaders relate the vision to the identity of the organization and its sense of purpose and direction so that people could understand the bigger picture and how it all fits together.

5. Maintaining and Sustaining

The inspirational leader would be careful to ensure that the organization is able to maintain and sustain itself as it moves forward. New structures, systems and policies would be created to support and strengthen the vision. Obsolete infrastructures would be removed in a way that cared for and balanced the whole.

6. Future Focus

They would look to the future to identify the web of interconnections so that the full range of implications and consequences of new actions could be understood and weighed.

7. Courageous Action

Of these inspiring leadership styles, these leaders are able and prepared to take courageous action that came from the heart despite what the numbers and the logical analysis said. They relate simple strategies that engage the hearts and minds of others.

8. Co-Creation

Finally, they will ensure that everyone has had a chance to contribute and feel that their words have been heard. They will be attuned to the level of vitality and energy in the organization and reluctant to move forward unless the enthusiasm generated by co-creation exists.

For us, this presentation is by far the strongest. Notice how the focus on a specific work process makes the discussion clear, focused and detailed. We like this guy ... measured, sincere and experienced. A great communicator (we don't know him).

Leadership Styles for Long Term Success

If you can employ each of these styles, evoking each one accurately (depending on the needs of the person and the situation) you'll have gone a long way towards developing a flexible, empathic leadership style. Good for you, your people and your organization.
